The $7 billion healthcare startup Ro, which has been prescribing brand-name weight-loss shots since January 2023, now offers compounded semaglutide to patients enrolled in its weight-management program. Nonetheless, Ro is the first prominent healthcare company to effectively endorse compounded semaglutide by prescribing it. A poor-quality compounded drug might simply be a dud and a waste of money. But while compounding pharmacies are subject to FDA and state regulations, states are the main regulators, and their oversight is patchy. Michael Siluk/UCG/Universal Images Group via Getty ImagesIt's hard to know if any given vial of compounded semaglutide is safe.

(Photo Illustration by Rafael Henrique/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images)Swiss pharmaceuticals giant Roche is set to acquire anti obesity drug developer Carmot Therapeutics, becoming the latest company to attempt to unseat Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly's dominance within the global weight-loss drugs market. The U.S. takeover target's early-stage technology could help crack highly prized oral obesity treatments, Roche Pharmaceuticals CEO Teresa Graham said Monday, but it may be several years before the drugs are widely available. The deal will provide Roche access to Carmot's current research and development portfolio, including all clinical and preclinical assets. Shares of the Swiss company, which have been in the doldrums this year, were up 2.25% following the news of the acquisition.

Indeed, studies show that drinking alcohol is less in vogue with younger millennials and Gen Z. Mounting concern around weight loss drugs GLP-1 drugs, which mimic the action of the glucagon-like peptide-1 hormone and stimulate insulin secretion after a meal, lower blood sugar and send feeling of fullness to the brain. What's more, GLP-1 drugs are an overwhelmingly American topic, with most Europeans unaware of them or unwilling to pay high prices. In total, GLP-1 users are only a very small slice of total alcohol consumers, said Spiros Malandrakis, lead alcohol industry researcher at Euromonitor International. The most vulnerable purveyors are those that are trailing the shift in consumption, notably domestic, non-premium beer brands.

NEW YORK, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Some big investors showed increased appetite for weight-loss drug makers in the third quarter, piling in to shares of Eli Lilly (LLY.N) and Novo Nordisk amid growing demand for their product, securities filings showed on Tuesday. Shares of Eli Lilly rose 14.5% in the third quarter and are up 67% this year. Some investors also bought more American Depositary Receipts of Novo Nordisk, including Fidelity Investments, Lazard Asset Management, T Rowe Price and Soros Fund. Novo Nordisk on Saturday presented data showing that the heart protective benefits of Wegovy are not solely due to weight loss, which could make it easier for healthcare insurance reimbursement in the future. Still, other investors trimmed their exposure to Eli Lilly, such as Wellington Management Group, California Public Employees Retirement System and Bridgewater Associates.

As its Covid gains evaporate, Pfizer wants a chunk of the budding weight loss drug market. Those companies helped spark the weight loss drug industry gold rush over the last year with their weekly obesity and diabetes injections, such as Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and Ozempic and Eli Lilly's Mounjaro. They want to see the drug cause a similar level of weight loss as a once-daily pill from Eli Lilly. "If Pfizer's data is positive, then I think people might be able to look beyond all this Covid overhang," Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Louise Chen told CNBC. A weight loss pill could be a boon for all three companies.

Eli Lilly on Thursday said supply of its blockbuster diabetes drug Mounjaro has improved in the U.S. after months of widespread shortages. During an earnings call Thursday, Eli Lilly executives said the company experienced tight supply for Mounjaro throughout most of the third quarter. But U.S. product shipments of Mounjaro have recently increased, and inventory levels at U.S. drug wholesalers have improved, according to Eli Lilly CFO Anat Ashkenazi. Eli Lilly has also invested more than $3 billion to build two new manufacturing sites in its home state of Indiana. Eli Lilly's main rival in the weight loss drug space, Novo Nordisk , is still navigating its own supply constraints of diabetes drug Ozempic and obesity treatment Wegovy.

Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly reign over the anti-obesity drug market, and don't expect this duopoly to end soon, analysts say. All this goes on amid robust demand for Novo's semaglutide, which is sold as Ozempic for type 2 diabetes and as Wegovy for weight loss, and Lilly's tirzepatide, which hopes to receive regulatory approval for weight loss this year. Orforglipron is an oral drug Eli Lilly is developing. It has several other compounds in the pipeline, but Suvannavejh expects the weight loss drug to receive increased attention. "This range would also be competitive with LLY's orforglipron [an oral GLP-1 drug] weight loss at day 28," Smith said.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Friday told investors what he'll be focusing on in the coming week, namely Wednesday's Federal Reserve meeting and earnings reports from companies such as Eli Lilly and Apple . Cramer noted that recent days have been "brutal" for the stock market and bemoaned the bond market's effect on stocks. On Monday, Cramer will be waiting to see the results of McDonald's earnings report. Cramer called Thursday the most important business day of the week, with earnings from drug maker Eli Lilly and tech giant Apple. One of the downsides of taking new anti-obesity medications is that patients tend to lose lean muscle mass along with body fat. "This is a major shortcoming in terms of not just quality of life for the patients who have to lose lean muscle mass, but there's actually room to improve on the weight loss and there [are] other metabolic benefits to improving your lean muscle mass ... [including] you might have better durability of weight loss." The drug is being tested in a phase 2b study alongside semaglutide to protect against loss of muscle mass. Until then, patients will need to watch what they eat and focus on exercise just as they would on any other weight loss regimen. When that occurs, muscle loss will be an even bigger issue than it is now.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 18 (Reuters) - Abbott Laboratories (ABT.N) said the market was overestimating the hit to sales of its glucose monitoring products from growing popularity of new diabetes drugs, adding the treatments could end up boosting sales of the medical device maker. The company's shares have dropped 16% this year, mainly on concerns that new GLP-1 diabetes drugs such as Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and Eli Lilly's Mounjaro could eat into the sales of its continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices. Hurdles in health insurance reimbursement and pricing could, however, keep market growth for GLP-1 drugs limited to a small number of patients in the near term, Abbott CEO Robert Ford said on Wednesday. Third-quarter sales of FreeStyle Libre, Abbott's CGM device used by diabetes patients, jumped 30.5% to $1.4 billion, lifting Abbott's shares 3% in morning trade. The numbers helped Abbott's medical device sales that stood at $4.25 billion, beating analysts' estimates of $4.16 billion, according to LSEG data.

Medical device stocks of all kinds were pummeled over the past week as investors tried to calculate the ripple effects of new weight loss drugs. While the use of the GLP-1 drugs to treat obesity is still very limited at this point, it is expected to soar to a $100 billion market or more, by some estimates. Judging by the momentum in the stocks, investors have been betting that as people lose weight, there will be a decline in knee replacement surgery. A case for more knee surgery? Based on Truist's polling of 50 hospital administrators, the analyst expects the third quarter will show a slowing pace of knee replacement surgeries compared to the first half of 2023.

U.S. health care providers wrote more than nine million prescriptions for Ozempic, Wegovy and similar diabetes and obesity drugs during the last three months of 2022, according to a new analysis released Wednesday. Among the other drugs prescribed are Eli Lilly's diabetes drug Mounjaro and an older GLP-1 drug from Novo Nordisk called Saxenda, which isn't as effective for weight loss as Ozempic and Wegovy. Ozempic's list price tops $935 per monthly package, and its weight loss counterpart Wegovy is about $1,300. Other drugmakers are jockeying to capitalize on the budding weight loss industry. And analysts say Eli Lilly's Mounjaro has the potential to overtake drugs from Novo Nordisk after its approved in the U.S. for weight loss.

While there has been a huge gain, it is barely scratching the surface of the potential market. Some potential patients don't have coverage of the pricey medicines through their health insurance plans yet. (For example, those seeking to use GLP-1 drugs for obesity can't receive coverage if they are insured by Medicare as the federal health plan is not allowed to cover weight loss drugs.) Walmart told Bank of America that fiscal second-quarter sales benefited roughly 1% from GLP-1 drug sales volumes. Its stock has fallen 45% year to date on fears that these drugs will shrink the company's market potential.

Fernandez sees a total addressable market of $140 billion to support patients with obesity. He expects there is a potential for GLP-1 drugs to become as common and widely used, much like statins are used to lower cholesterol. Morgan Stanley's Flynn estimates a 30% share of the diabetes market would generate $109 billion on a worldwide basis for GLP-1 drugs. Layer in a 15% to 30% share of the obesity market and that equates to worldwide sales of $97.4 billion to $194.8 billion. Guggenheim's estimates also assume that oral GLP-1 drugs that are currently in development are able to come to market a few years from now.

Industry analysts are insisting that new weight loss and diabetes drugs like Ozempic won't hurt the demand for insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors, but most investors aren't buying it. The impact of new weight loss treatments is being felt well beyond the health-care industry . During the second quarter, which beat expectations , shoppers were still focused on health and wellness, CEO Doug McMillon said Thursday. Some companies already bar weight loss medications from their insurance plans to keep costs down. Executives said it was tied to an increase in specialty drug use for weight loss and diabetes. Eli Lilly's Mounjaro hasn't yet been approved for weight loss, though some people are taking it off label for that reason.

One such prediction came Monday from Morgan Stanley analysts who forecasted a 1.3% drop in calorie consumption in the U.S. by 2035. The shift in behavior is notable because it will affect a sizeable demographic group that represents a disproportionate share of food consumption, the analysts said. In fact, some patients taking these medicines say they have to sometimes force themselves to eat due to a lack of appetite. These types of patterns were seen in consumer research Morgan Stanley conducted in June and July among 300 patients taking these medicines. Keurig Dr Pepper, with its coffee business accounting for about 30% of corporate sales, offers some diversification from at-risk beverage categories, Morgan Stanley said.

Wegovy prescriptions were up 300% at their peak, according to data from Barclays, before supply issues began to hamper sales. A COMPELLING CASEAnalysts said the data made a compelling case for long-term health benefits of the drug. Analysts were divided on whether Medicare could potentially cover Wegovy as a cardiovascular treatment without a new law passing. Three doctors specializing in obesity treatment, including a cardiologist, were not sure whether such an indication would allow for Medicare coverage. Companies that provide healthcare insurance have begun pulling back on coverage of weight loss drugs because of the high cost of the medicines.

"With 8 direct and 15 indirect catalysts in the next ~12-18 months, we see several near-term opportunities to further drive GPCR shares," Rahimi wrote in a research note. Structure's ticker symbol is a nod to the company's research, which focuses on G protein-coupled receptors, or GPCRs, a growing area of drug development. GSBR-1290 is Structure's GLP-1R agonist that is being studied as treatment for type 2 diabetes and obesity. If successful, the drug could one day compete against Novo Nordisk's blockbusters Ozempic and Wegovy and Eli Lilly's Mounjaro. Separately, the analyst said Structure's other early stage drug candidate, LTSE-2578, provides further upside as investors have largely overlooked the opportunity it provides.

Medicare is barred under a 2003 law from paying for weight-loss medications like Wegovy. Lawmakers on Thursday reintroduced a bill that would expand Medicare coverage to the drugs. A major roadblock has long stood in the way of older Americans getting treatments for obesity: Medicare. But US lawmakers on Thursday took steps to broaden access to weight-loss treatment for seniors. Medicare coverage might prod other health insurers to pay for weight-loss medications, as private health plans tend to follow Medicare's lead.

Americans are clamoring for new weight-loss drugs, but companies aren't rushing to pay for them. At most, half of US employers help pay for weight-loss drugs for their workers, according to several estimates. "The drug companies, providers, and patient groups are insisting that weight loss will improve health and therefore offset these massive costs.
